“You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.”
-Isaiah 26:3
Depression is a heavy weight that can creep in like a dark cloud that seems impossible to escape. For some, it is a temporary struggle, while for others, it can feel like a daily battle that drains all hope and strength. Yet even in the depths of despair, God’s Word offers a powerful promise: a peace that surpasses our understanding when our minds are focused on Him.
In times of depression, our minds are often filled with painful thoughts that spiral into worry, fear, or worthlessness. These thoughts can rob us of joy, and they are not from God. John 10:10 tells us clearly: the thief—the enemy of our souls—comes only to steal, kill, and destroy. Depression is one of his tactics, and he uses it in an attempt to break us down. But Jesus came that we may have life and have it more abundantly. He is the One who restores and brings true peace, even when nothing seems right.
Choosing to keep our minds “stayed” on God, as Isaiah 26:3 says, means deliberately shifting our focus from our pain to God’s promises. This doesn’t mean ignoring our feelings, but instead, letting God’s truth challenge and transform them. Philippians 4:8 guides us to think on things that are true, noble, and lovely. By meditating on God’s love, we invite His peace to replace the turmoil inside.
Depression often tempts us to withdraw, but we were created for connection. Romans 12:15 encourages us to rejoice and weep with one another. Sharing our struggles with a trusted friend or a counselor is part of God’s design for healing. Depression is real, but so is God’s presence, ready to bring hope and peace when we stay focused on Him. Trust Him, and know that you are not alone.
