Praying with Confidence

Praying with Confidence
By Pastor Duane Vander Klok

Prayer is much more powerful than most people realize. When you develop an effective prayer life, you are not simply repeating religious words and hoping circumstances will improve. You are coming into fellowship with the living God, bringing your needs before Him, receiving His peace, and cooperating with His purpose.

He desires a close relationship with you and loves to hear you call His name. He also cares about the details of your daily life. Because He understands what we face, we can “come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need” (Hebrews 4:16a).

God is for you, and you can experience a more powerful and effective prayer life.

Pray With Faith

Hebrews 11:6 underscores the role of faith when we pray. It says, “But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.”

Prayer is an opportunity to come before our Heavenly Father and depend on His wisdom and power. Philippians 4:6–7 instructs us: “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

Nothing is too big for God's power or too small to matter to Him. We can pray about everything: our families, finances, health, decisions, relationships, spiritual struggles, and the needs of others. Whatever concerns you, bring it to Him in faith. You may not see an immediate change in your circumstances, but you can trust Him to hear you and help you through what you face.

Faith is not pretending a problem doesn't exist or convincing ourselves that everything is fine. Faith is trusting God's character, believing His Word, and continuing to turn to Him even when we don't understand everything that is happening.

Discover God’s Will

As a believer, you have been made righteous through the blood of Jesus Christ. James 5:16 tells us, “The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.” Because of what Jesus accomplished through His death and resurrection, we can approach God with confidence, knowing that our prayers matter and that He hears us.

1 John 5:14–15 says, “Now this is the confidence we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, and if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him.” But how do we know God's will?

One of the most important ways we can know God's will is through His Word. The Bible reveals His character, His purposes, and the promises He has made to His people. As we learn what He has said, we gain a stronger foundation for our prayers.

Jesus taught us to pray to the Father in His name. In John 16:23, He said, “...Most assuredly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give you.” Asking in His name is more than adding the words “In Jesus' name” to the end of a prayer. We approach the Father on the basis of what Jesus has done for us, trusting in His finished work and seeking to pray in agreement with His purposes.

Build Your Faith on God’s Word

In the same way we received salvation through faith, we can also take hold of God's other promises through faith and prayer. 2 Corinthians 1:20 tells us, “For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us.”

Please do not miss the significance of this verse. God's promises find their fulfillment in Christ, and because of what Jesus has done, we can approach our Father with confidence in His faithfulness.

When you face a difficult situation, don't allow it to dominate your thoughts and prayers. Instead, bring it to God and look to His Word. If fear is troubling you, meditate on His promises of peace and His presence. If you need wisdom, look to Him for direction. If you are facing spiritual opposition, stand on what Scripture says about your identity in Christ and the victory Jesus has won.

Isaiah 55:11 assures us that God's Word will accomplish the purpose for which He sends it. As we pray His Word, we place our confidence in His faithfulness, not in the eloquence of our own words.

This doesn't mean we can make God do whatever we want by simply repeating a promise. It means we have a reliable foundation for our faith because God is faithful. Rather than allowing our circumstances to shape what we believe about God, we let His Word determine how we view them and continue trusting Him while we wait for the answer.

Stand in Your Authority

We need to understand that our prayers are not powerful because of us. The power comes from God, and there isn't anything He cannot do! Ephesians 3:20–21 reminds us that He is able to do “exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to His power that works in us.”

As a child of God, you don't have to live in fear or feel helpless when you face spiritual opposition. Jesus gave His disciples authority over the power of the enemy. He said, “Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy…” (Luke 10:19a). James 4:7 also tells us, “Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.”

Notice the order. We submit ourselves to God. We resist the devil. He flees!

In Jesus' name, you can resist temptation, reject lies that contradict God's Word, and refuse to allow fear and condemnation to control your life. Where there is demonic oppression, you can pray with authority in Jesus' name, trusting in His power and victory. This doesn't mean we control every circumstance or that believers will never face hardship. It means we can stand against the enemy in the authority Jesus has given us and trust in His power rather than our own.

2 Corinthians 10:4–5 reminds us that our spiritual weapons are mighty in God for pulling down strongholds and bringing our thoughts into obedience to Christ. Strongholds involve patterns of thinking and arguments that oppose the knowledge of God. As we renew our minds with His Word, we become better equipped to recognize deception and stand in the truth.

We are not fighting for victory; we are standing in the victory Jesus has already won.

Make Prayer a Way of Life

An effective prayer life doesn't happen automatically. It begins with a desire to know God and grows as we make time for Him and learn to trust Him. Developing consistency requires discipline, but prayer should never become just an obligation on your list.

As you spend time with God, you learn more about His character, His love, and His faithfulness. You discover that you can bring Him your concerns without fear of rejection and trust Him even when the answers don't come as quickly as you would like. Over time, prayer can become less of a duty and more of a delight.

Psalm 37:4 encourages us to delight ourselves in the Lord. As we grow closer to Him, our desires are shaped by His heart. We begin to care about the things He cares about, and our prayers increasingly reflect His purposes.

You can—and should—make prayer a normal part of your everyday life. 1 Thessalonians 5:17 tells us to “pray without ceasing.” This doesn't mean we must spend every moment praying. It means we maintain an awareness of God's presence and turn to Him throughout the day, bringing our thoughts, decisions, needs, and concerns before Him.

And what about those times when you don't know what to pray? Romans 8:26–27 reminds us that the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. When we don't know how to pray as we should, we can depend on His help and trust that He intercedes according to the will of God.

You don't have to know everything about prayer to begin praying more effectively. When a need arises, bring it to God, look to His Word, pray with confidence in Jesus' name, and depend on the Holy Spirit to help you. Learn to stand in the authority Jesus has given you, and trust Him as you wait for the answer.

God wants you to know that you are not facing life's challenges alone. He hears you, cares about your needs, and invites you to draw near to Him. As you grow in your understanding of His Word and your relationship with Him, you can experience a more confident, consistent, and effective prayer life!
