“Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.” – James 1:16-17
Every person on the planet encounters adversity from time to time. When trials come their way, many people are tempted to question God or even blame Him for their suffering. However, James 1:16-17 makes it clear that every good and perfect gift comes from God the Father.
It is important to remember that God is not only good; He is the author of all that is good. His constant love and goodness are consistent with His unchanging character and nature. When we face difficulties, it is not God testing or punishing us. Instead, we are often up against a different force altogether.
The Bible identifies Satan as our personal adversary. Jesus Himself said that Satan comes to “steal, kill, and destroy” (John 10:10). He is the one responsible for the evils that afflict us, not God our Father. Understand this: God’s intentions for us are always rooted in love and goodness.
Acts 10:38 tells us: “God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.” This verse makes it clear that the oppression and suffering Jesus healed was the work of the devil, not of God.
So, do not allow yourself to be deceived. As you face challenges or adversity, turn to God, not away from Him. Recognize the spiritual battle you are in, and do as 1 Peter 5:8-9 encourages. Be sober and vigilant, resisting the devil steadfast in the faith. In doing these things, you can overcome adversity and experience the good and perfect gifts only God can give!
