“Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.” - Matthew 6:13
When Jesus taught His disciples to pray, He included the phrase "deliver us from evil." Some versions translate it as “deliver us from the evil one.” Regardless of the translation, this verse underscores the purpose of salvation: to free us from evil and the evil one. This was—and still is—the mission of Jesus.
The Apostle Paul emphasized this in Romans 1:16, when he wrote, "For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone who believes." The moment you believe in the message of Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection, the power of the gospel is activated in your life. Your belief and trust in Jesus enables your forgiveness, salvation, and deliverance.
Throughout the Bible, from Genesis to Revelation, Satan appears as a deceiver and a thief. In Genesis 3, he deceived Eve by questioning God's command. As a result, sin and death came into the world. Satan's role as a deceiver continued when he tempted Jesus in the wilderness. In Matthew 4:8-9, he offered Jesus all earthly authority if He would bow down and worship him. Jesus resisted by quoting Scripture, showing us that God’s Word is the ultimate weapon against Satan's lies and attacks.
If you are a believer, you have already been delivered from the evil one! The devil does not have the power to force you to sin. However, he can still use lies to tempt you. This is why Ephesians 6:11-17 instructs you how to stand firm in your faith just as Jesus did when He was tempted. By wielding the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God, you can overcome the enemy and live in the victory that Jesus has secured for you!
