Stepping Out

Duane Vander Klok

For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “The just shall live by faith.”
Romans 1:17

God is still working on earth today just like He did throughout the Bible. It may be harder to see in our culture, but His works can be seen easily throughout the world. So why can it be so difficult to see where God is moving here in Western culture? We learn in Mark 6:5-6 that unbelief and a lack of faith can keep Him from moving in our lives.

When everything we think we need is available to us, it is difficult to trust in God. Think of it this way: if you do not need to lean on God daily, you are not dreaming big enough. God wants to lead you from faith to faith, strength to strength, and glory to glory. He wants you to grow and lean on Him for big things! When you follow God, the faith you have now will not be enough for the future – you will need to grow in faith to go where He leads.

Do you remember the big step of faith that Jesus asked of His disciple Peter? Jesus was walking on the water toward His disciples on their boat when He invited Peter to come to Him. In a big leap of faith, Peter stepped out of the boat and began walking on water toward Jesus. Now, he needed a lot of faith in order to take that first step. But with every step further from the boat, he needed more and more faith in Jesus. As you follow God’s will, you will be asked to do many things that are beyond your comfort zone – His will requires faith because it requires Him. He does not ask you to do it alone in your own strength, but instead to trust in Him!

Peter took that first step out of the boat, and he even took a few more steps. But when he took his eyes off Jesus, he began to sink. Why? He began to lose faith in what God was doing. When we take our eyes of God and look at our circumstances, fear can creep in. You are out on the water only with God’s help, and you will stay afloat only with His help. What are one or two ways that God is asking you to step out of the boat?
