Your Words Matter

Duane Vander Klok

“The words of the reckless pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing” (Proverbs 12:18, NIV).

Whoever came up with the phrase, “sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me,” apparently did not know how God feels about our words.

In today’s scripture, we see clearly that the words we speak have great power. They can cut someone like a knife or promote health; they can destroy or build up.

Unfortunately, even the careless words that we forget as soon as they have left our mouths can stick with others for a very long time. Those negative, hurtful words can actually shape someone’s perspective of themselves and alter the course of their future – even in our families.

Take a minute to think about your words. Do you choose them wisely – or do you have a tendency to say the first thing that comes into your mind?

God’s intent is that our words would carry His grace and show His love to those around us. Why not ask Him to help you speak words that bring life and healing to those around you?
