Union With Him
For if by the one man’s offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.
Romans 5:17
When God created man and woman, He gave them dominion over the earth to tend, guard, and keep the Garden of Eden. Psalm 8:6 says, You have made him to have dominion over the works of Your hands; You have put all things under his feet. But Adam and Eve disobeyed God, and they gave their dominion and authority over to the enemy. As the representative man, Adam passed on this brokenness to all people coming after him, including you and me. We entered a world full of sin, pain, sickness, death and, worst of all, a broken relationship with God.
But Adam was not the only representative for mankind. Jesus came as the second and last representative. In His death and resurrection, He delivered us from the broken condition that we were born into and offered full redemption. Just like you were born into sin through Adam, when you accepted Jesus’s gift of salvation, you were placed in the grave, raised, and seated with Him!
When you accepted this gift, you became a new creation in Christ. You were washed clean and made brand new. You are not waiting to be new, trying to be new, or hoping to be made new in the future, but immediately you are a new creation!
We know that we start out in union with Adam, but when we accept Christ, we are in union with Him and an heir to the promise. The Bible tells us that the free gift of salvation is not like the offense—we were born into sin with no choice, but we have to make the decision to follow Jesus. 2 Corinthians 5:21 says, For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
What God did through Jesus was so much greater than what the enemy did through Adam. Through His blood you were qualified. You are not waiting to be made right tomorrow, next year, or at the end of your life; and you are not held down by the enemy any longer, but you are qualified by the blood of Christ. Colossians 1:12 says, giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light. Know that you are made new and an heir to the promises of God!
