The Good Fight

Duane Vander Klok

“Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses” (1 Timothy 6:12).

When the Apostle Paul referred to the Christian life as the good fight of faith, he wasn’t talking about a physical battle. He was speaking about the words we speak as we take our stand against the enemy.

Ephesians 6:12 makes it clear who this enemy is. It says, “We do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.”

When Jesus was in the wilderness, being tempted by the devil, you’ll notice that He did not fight with natural weapons. As you can see in the 4th chapter of Matthew, it was a war of words. Over and over, Jesus overcame the devil with the words “It is written.”

You can overcome, too.

Today, as you encounter the pull of the world, the flesh and the devil, realize the power of your words. As you speak words that reflect the Word of God you’ve hidden in your heart, you can fight – and win – the good fight of faith!
