The Gift of the Holy Spirit

Duane Vander Klok

Nevertheless, I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.
John 16:7

Sometimes we get stuck wishing that we could have seen Jesus’s ministry while He was here on earth. But the truth is that Jesus is still doing ministry here today! He works in three parts. The first area of His ministry is intercession for us. The second is building His church! And the final area is baptizing believers in the Holy Spirit. The baptism of the Holy Spirit is something that Jesus wants us to have. It is to our advantage that Jesus ascended to heaven so that we may receive the Holy Spirit. He is our advocate, counselor, comforter, and peace.

When you first believe, you receive the Holy Spirit. But the baptism of the Holy Spirit is something different and additional. When Jesus rose from the dead and appeared to the disciples, He breathed on them saying “receive the Holy Spirit.” And before He ascended to heaven, he instructed them to wait in Jerusalem for the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Jesus knew that they would need this gift before beginning their ministry. The Holy Spirit empowers you to be a witness for the gospel!

The baptism of the Holy Spirit is an awesome gift from God to us as believers. It is not given when we are good enough or holy enough – it cannot be earned – but it is given because God is good! This gift is available to all believers to be received with faith.

If you would like to receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit, below is a prayer that you can pray.

Heavenly Father,
You say in Your Word that the Holy Spirit is a good gift and that everyone who asks will receive. I ask to be baptized in the Holy Spirit in Jesus’s Name. Thank you for filling me, empowering my life to be a witness for You, and for giving me the gift of tongues. I believe and receive right now! Amen.
