The Father of Lies

Duane Vander Klok

Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?” And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden; but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.’ ” Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” –Genesis 3:1-5

We see examples over and over again in the Bible of how the devil is a liar. He comes with deception and stealth to steal away the truth from your heart. Like the story of Adam and Eve, the devil’s goal is to separate you from God.

The devil will use every tool in his belt to keep you from the love of God – his goal is to kill, steal, and destroy God’s children. He will use culture, politics, religion, the pursuit of pleasure and money, fear, illness, and every horrible or perverted thing. Today, our culture has a lot of influence from the devil, so take care to guard your heart and mind. Fill your thoughts with God’s Word, deeds, and promises so that it overtakes the influence of the world in your heart.

Romans 12:2 says, Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. Do not allow the world to shape your thoughts and character. Instead, turn to God for guidance, wisdom, insight, and strength to fight back against the lies of the devil.
