Standing in the Storm

Duane Vander Klok

“Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.
“But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.”

Matthew 7:24-27

In this passage, Jesus tells the parable of the wise man who built his house on a rock and the foolish man who built his house on the sand. The rain and storms came to threaten both of the houses, but what mattered was the foundation on which the house was built. The wise man built on a solid and true foundation, while the foolish man built on wavering and ever-changing sand. In a world of shifting cultures and inconsistent “truth,” the only solid and true foundation is the Word of God.

You will face storms in your life no matter the strength of your foundation. However, when your trust is in your Heavenly Father, the storms cannot destroy you! But take care to prepare your foundation before the storm comes – you cannot build a boat in a hurricane. Sow into your relationship with God in sun and rain, so that when the storms do come, you have a foundation to stand on. When you turn to God for comfort and strength on a daily basis, you will know where to turn in a storm.

As you pass through rain and sun, know that God is with you. He is the Giver of all good gifts, so if your situation is not good yet, He is not done working! Allow Him to speak to you in those hard times, and stand on His solid foundation with His strength upholding you.
