Raise the Bar

For You, O Lord, will bless the righteous; with favor You will surround him as with a shield. Psalms 5:12

There is an old adage that says, “If anything can go wrong, it probably will.” Perhaps you’ve heard it.

Many people, even some Christians, live their lives according to that statement, but it is totally contrary to what God says. In fact, God has given us thousands of promises in the Bible – and each one of them is available to every believer.

We should actually be saying, “If anything can go wrong, it is NOT going to happen to me!”

In Proverbs 23:7, we see the principle that “as a man thinks in his heart, so is he.” You see, our faith and the level of our expectations have a lot to do with what happens to us in life. When God tells us that He wants to bless us and not only give us favor, but to surround us with favor like a shield, that should raise the level of our expectation!

Psalm 103:2-6, 17-18 lists some of the specific areas affected by God’s favor. According to the psalmist, we should live knowing that God will forgive our sins, heal our diseases, redeem us from destruction, crown us with loving kindness and tender mercies, provide for our health and strength, give us justice when we’re oppressed, and extend His righteousness to our children’s children as we keep covenant with Him. And, that’s just scratching the surface of what God’s children can, and should, expect.

Today, realize that it is God’s will for you to experience His favor. Every promise He has made is for you, and as Jesus said, “According to your faith it will be done to you” (Matthew 9:29).
