Knocking Down Goliath

Duane Vander Klok

The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in Him, and He helps me. My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise Him.
Psalm 28:7

Did you know that God wants your life to be full of blessings? Yet this doesn’t mean that life is going to be easy. Life is going to be filled with obstacles, opposition, and giants. Sometimes, our response is, “God, I know that you love me, want to bless me, and have a great plan for me, BUT…” We begin to rationalize why we cannot get from where we are, to where we know God wants us to be. We begin to fear the giants instead of Fearing the Lord.

Here’s the thing, God knows every single obstacle, opposition, and giant that will stand in front of you. God has a plan and purpose to strengthen and mature you in your life and faith. Throughout the Old Testament, we see Israel have moments of amazing faith in Him, but then slowly begin to slip backwards to a place of fear and submission to the giants of this world.

Yet every single time, when these obstacles and challenges show up in the lives of His people, God also shows up. In the lion’s den, God is there. Standing before Goliath, God is there. Within the fiery furnace, God is there. Instead of seeing the obstacle and saying, “But God, a Goliath is standing before me,” God wants us to say to our obstacles, “Goliath, you are standing before me, BUT GOD is with me. BUT GOD is bigger than you. BUT GOD has called me to a greater place beyond you.”

This week, let’s not only look at the giants in our lives, but also see and trust He who is with us: the Lord. Let’s confess our fears to Him, submit everything to Him, and know that He is with us through it all.
