The Best Gift

Duane Vander Klok

…When I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also.
2 Timothy 1:5

In this verse, Paul is writing to Timothy and recognizes that his faith had been passed down through his grandmother and mother. The best gift that your mother can ever leave you is not a trust fund or inheritance but faith.

Mothers are a special gift from God. The pure and genuine love of a mother is unconditional. When no one else believes in you, your mother will; when you’ve lost hope in yourself, your mother hasn’t; when your prayers run dry, your mother is praying for you. The power of a praying mother can get you through anything! And the faith that is in her heart can also be in yours.

Ephesians 6:1-3 says, Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with promise: “that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.” This commandment has a promise—that it may go well with you. Honoring your parents is not only something God asks you to do, it is a promise that He will honor in your life. You may say, “I cannot honor my mother; it is too difficult.” But God does not ask you to honor your mother because she was a perfect parent, but because you love her and you love God.

As Jesus was on the cross, He instructed one of His disciples to care for His mother, Mary. Even as He was dying, He made sure that His mother was honored and cared for. Like Jesus and Timothy, honor you mother and follow in her faith!
