Choose Your Words

Duane Vander Klok

“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” Ephesians 4:29

It is very possible to have faith, but not know how to release it. Having faith is not just having hope in what is going to happen, but it is the confidence in receiving it and then using it to push forward into the next situation or season of life. Our faith is also not just for ourselves, but is important for the people around us. One of the best ways that we respond to our faith is by aligning our words with God and speaking!

Scripture tells us that death and life are in the power of the tongue. Everything that we say can either be taken as encouragement or discouragement. When we speak, we align ourselves to the spirit behind the words. If we speak lies, deceit, and discouragement, we are aligning ourselves with the Enemy, who is the father of lies. Yet, when we speak life, encouragement, and change our focus back to God, we align ourselves with Him.

When David was discouraged because King Saul was trying to kill him, and he hid in the wilderness, Jonathan spoke life and encouragement into his situation. It would have been very easy for Jonathan to align with his father, but he instead aligned himself with his faith in what God was doing. Encouragement is life oxygen to the soul.

This week, let’s activate our faith, align our words with God, and begin to speak life into our situations and into the lives of the people around us.
