Choose Life

“I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live.” –Deuteronomy 30:19
God has given us many amazing gifts, and one of them is the power of choice. This gift has the capacity to direct our lives and shape our destinies. But along with the freedom to choose also comes a weight of responsibility—the responsibility to make choices that align with God’s will and His purposes for our lives.
In Deuteronomy 30:19, God states that He has given us two potential paths. One leads to life and blessings, the other to death and cursing. The choice, He says, is ours. But then He makes it easy by telling us which one to make! He says, “Therefore, choose life.”
To choose life is to choose heaven and all of the blessings that come to those who walk in the ways of the Lord. It is to align our hearts with His perfect will and to allow Him to guide us through life and into an eternity spent with Him.
Each and every day, we are presented with choices—some are small and not of great importance, others are highly significant. In the midst of these choices, there is one decision that surpasses all the others in its eternal ramifications: the choice of where we will spend eternity.
But not everyone makes the choice. And not to choose, is in fact, a choice in itself – a choice made by default. If you do not actively pursue the path of life, you can easily end up on the path that leads to death and destruction. Both apathy toward God and indecision can lead to separation from God in this life and the next.
This week, may the words of Deuteronomy 30:19 resonate deeply within your spirit so you do not live by default. Choose life. Choose blessings. Choose heaven. And in choosing, you will find fulfillment, purpose, and everlasting peace!
