A Mother’s Influence

Duane Vander Klok

“…I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also.” 2 Timothy 1:5

As the Apostle Paul here is reflecting on Timothy’s upbringing, he mentions both Timothy’s grandmother and his mother. Paul recognized that Timothy’s faith had been influenced greatly by these two fine women.

We can assume from Paul’s words that while Timothy was growing up, both his mother and grandmother spent hours with him, telling him stories from the Old Testament, praying for and with him, training him to be a godly man. They raised him in an environment where he could flourish spiritually.

Nothing can replace the role of a mother in a child’s life – and especially in a child’s life of faith.

If you are a mother, instill in your children a respect for scripture and an authentic faith. Be encouraged that the seeds you plant in the lives of your children will produce fruit!

And for those of us who are not mothers, take a moment to thank God for the mother He gave you!
