A Powerful Gift

Duane Vander Klok

But you, dear friends, by building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in God’s love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life.
Be merciful to those who doubt; save others by snatching them from the fire; to others show mercy, mixed with fear—hating even the clothing stained by corrupted flesh.

Jude 1:20-23

Most Christians today believe that Jesus died only to get us into heaven. But there is so much more! He died and rose again to get heaven into you today, and we are called to build His Kingdom here on earth. God’s focus is to get heaven’s culture into you today, so that you live in the blessings He has promised and share the gospel effectively.

When Jesus ascended to heaven, He left us with the promise of the Holy Spirit. The bible tells us that the baptism of the Holy Spirit is more than just receiving the Spirit. In John 20:22, Jesus breathes on the disciples and they receive the Spirit. But later in Acts 1:4, He instructs them to wait for the baptism of the Holy Spirit. They had already received the Spirit, but there was more! Acts 1:8 tells us what we receive through the baptism of the Holy Spirit: “…You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

When you get saved, you receive the Holy Spirit. He will lead, guide, and comfort you. But when you are baptized in the Holy Spirit, you receive the power to be a witness for the gospel. This gift is primarily used to equip and empower you to build His Kingdom here on earth as a witness.

One of the tools that comes with the baptism of the Holy Spirit is speaking in tongues. When you speak in tongues, your spirit is speaking directly to God with the help of the Holy Spirit. Tongues edifies your spirit, building you up to effectively reach the lost and help those in need. As you connect directly with your Heavenly Father, you are rested, comforted, and empowered to share the gospel!
