Everlasting Hope
Duane Vander Klok
Blessed are those who dwell in Your house;
They will still be praising You. Selah
Blessed is the man whose strength is in You,
Whose heart is set on pilgrimage.
As they pass through the Valley of Baca,
They make it a spring;
The rain also covers it with pools.
Psalm 84:4-6
Have you ever felt alone, helpless, or heartbroken? You are not the only one! The author of Psalm 84 tells us about those who have passed through the Valley of Baca – meaning a place of weeping. But notice that they did not stay there – they passed through.
When you come into lonely, difficult, or heartbreaking times, you do not have to stay. There is a way out! In order to pass through, you have to know where you are going. As a believer, your heart is set on eternity rather than earthly hardships. You have a hope that calls you to something more than your current situation. Philippians 3:20 says, For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. Your future is in heaven with God the Father! Verse five tells us that your heart is strengthened as you look to the hope and commission that you have in Christ.
Colossians 3:2-4 says, Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory. When you fill your mind with the Word of God, you may be in the Valley of Baca, but you are passing through with a purpose! Setting your mind on God’s Kingdom and eternity with Him will lead you through and give you a hope beyond earthly circumstances.
