Immovable Faith
Duane Vander Klok
And we desire that each one of you show the same diligence to the full assurance of hope to the end, that you do not become sluggish, but imitate those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.
Hebrews 6:11-12
How can we grow in faith and deepen our relationship with God? Well, God’s Word tells us that we can start by glorifying and esteeming His Word above all else.
We have a great example in Abraham in the Old Testament. God made a promise that Abraham would be the father of many nations. At the time, Abraham and his wife were very old and this promise did not seem possible. But Abraham chose to believe God’s Word. Romans 4:20-22 says, He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God, and being fully convinced that what He had promised He was also able to perform. And therefore, “it was accounted to him for righteousness.” Abraham was strengthened in faith as he stood on God’s promise. Faith is not trying to make God do something for you, but rather acting and believing as though He has already done it. Even when it looked impossible, Abraham trusted and esteemed God’s Word over all else.
You may ask “how was he able to have so much faith?” The verse tells us that he stood in faith by giving glory to God. Abraham was fully convinced that God would come through, and he was already praising Him for the victory. Abraham glorified God and stood in faith even when he faced the impossible. Too often we magnify the obstacles and hardships rather than God’s Word. There are so many things that attempt to occupy our minds, and it is a fight against culture, comfort, experience, and even the opinions of those around us to keep God’s Word first in our hearts and thoughts.
Proverbs 10:29 says, The way of the Lord is strength to the upright. Every time you choose God’s way over the world, your spirit and faith are strengthened. And when we esteem God’s Word, our faith grows and we are blessed. What has first place in your heart?
