The Sower
Duane Vander Klok
The Word of God is like a seed. It is God-breathed and living, and it thrives in good soil. In Mark 4:4-8, Jesus shares the parable of the sower. “As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants, so that they did not bear grain. Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up, grew and produced a crop, some multiplying thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times.”
In order to grow in relationship with God, like the seed in good soil, you need to prepare your heart to receive His Word. Don’t make your heart like the path, stones, or weeds where His Word can be taken, wither, or fail to bear a harvest. Prepare your heart to receive by meditating on and obeying the Word.
As you sow His Word in your heart, it will continue to grow and mature in your life. But like the seed, maturing takes time. The seed will sprout, grow a leaf or two, and eventually bloom, but it is a process—the seed must be watered and cared for daily.
His Word in your heart is powerful. It has the potential to remove hopelessness, addiction, sickness, and depression from your heart and your life. But do not wait for adversity to come before you begin sowing into your heart. Proverbs 24:10 says, “If you faint in the day of adversity, your strength is small.” Give the seed time to grow and mature in your heart so that when faced with hard times, your faith will be strong.
Even small seeds that find their way into the crevice of a rock have the potential to grow into plants strong enough to split it. In the spiritual realm, a small seed of the Word of God, has the ability to grow and force sickness, addiction, depression, and hopelessness out of your life!
Remember it takes some time to grow, so don’t give up. Keep sowing God’s word into your heart!
