Who Is God?
Duane Vander Klok
“But you, Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness.” Psalm 86:15
One of the greatest questions that we can ask ourselves is, ‘what do I believe about God?’ The way that you answer this question is one of the most important things about yourself. Does He exist? Is He always angry or upset? Is He all-loving and filled with compassion? Does He even care? Is He a rewarder, or is He vengeful? Wherever or however you were brought up in the Church, you are going to have an idea or belief about who God is.
Here’s the thing, there is an Enemy that wants to convince us that God is angry, upset, isn’t loving, and isn’t full of grace, mercy, and forgiveness. The Enemy wants to take whatever situation that we face at any given time, twist it, and speak lies about ourselves and about God’s true heart and identity. You see, God isn’t in Heaven with a big fly swatter waiting for you to mess up. He isn’t standing on the edge of a cloud with a lightning bolt poised above His head waiting to ‘smite’ you.
Here’s the truth, God is not angry at you. Scripture tells us that God is full of mercy, grace, and forgiveness. He sent His one and only Son to experience life, die on a cross for our sins, and rise again so that we might believe and live in right relationship with Him. You see, God hates anything that separates Him from those He loves. He hates sin, death, and the Enemy.
This week, let’s refocus our belief about God and look at what Scripture tells us is true about Him.
