Keys to Greatness
“But whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant.” Matthew 20:26
Greatness is often misunderstood as being associated with power, influence and fame, but Jesus offers a different path. In a world often driven by self-interest, He calls us to something higher — to live selflessly with Him as our example. Even though He had all power and authority, He humbled Himself to serve and love others. We are called to do the same.
Philippians 2:3-4 tells us not to do anything through selfish ambition or conceit, but to think differently and esteem others more than we do ourselves. It also says we should not just look out for our own interests, but also for the interests of others. This reminds us that true greatness is found not in selfishly seeking our own way, but in considering others as more important than ourselves.
When we prioritize the well-being of those around us, we mirror the heart of Christ, who laid down His life for us. As Jesus said, “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45).
Living selflessly requires us to shift our focus from our own desires and trust God with the outcome. Jesus taught that it is in giving that we receive, and in losing our lives for His sake, we find them (Matthew 16:25). We are called to follow this path, trusting God to provide for us as we serve others.
As we invite the Holy Spirit to transform our hearts, we will grow in selflessness and become more like Jesus. This not only blesses those around us but it also gives us deeper joy and fulfillment that can only be found in a life surrendered to God’s will.
